7-Day Bhutan Cultural Itinerary Template

Arrive Paro, drive to Thimphu

Punakha to Paro
Drive back over Dochula, stop in Thimphu if needed, arrive Paro, visit Rinpung Dzong and the old town.
Tiger’s Nest hike
Full morning hike to Taktsang monastery (4–5 hours round trip), afternoon rest, a farmhouse dinner and hot-stone bath.
Departure
Morning at Kyichu Lhakhang or the National Museum, transfer to Paro airport.

How does the Sustainable Development Fee change how an agent prices this trip?
Bhutan charges a per-person, per-night Sustainable Development Fee on top of all travel costs, and every visitor must travel on a pre-arranged itinerary with a licensed operator and guide. That means the trip length directly drives the government levy, so shortening or extending by a day has a fixed, visible cost the client should see in the quote. It also means independent, guide-free days are not possible, and hotels must be on the approved list. Build the quote as SDF plus land services plus flights, and confirm the current SDF rate at the time of booking because it has changed more than once.
Is the Tiger’s Nest hike manageable for an average group?
For reasonably fit adults, yes: it is a steady 900-metre climb over about two to three hours up, on a wide trail, with a cafeteria at the halfway point and ponies available for the lower section. Altitude (the monastery sits around 3,120 metres) is the bigger factor than fitness, which is why the template places it on day six after the group has acclimatised in Thimphu and Punakha. Offer a shorter option to the first viewpoint for anyone who does not want the full climb.
Can a festival be built into this itinerary?
Yes, and it is worth doing. The Paro and Thimphu tshechus in spring and autumn are major cultural events with masked dances, and aligning the itinerary to catch one adds real value. Book eight to twelve months ahead for festival dates because hotels in that valley fill first, and be ready to reorder the days so the group is in the right town on the right day.
