How does an agent turn this Vietnam template into a private tour versus a group departure?
The route itself works either way. For a private tour, keep the overnight cruise but book a smaller boat, and give the Hoi An and Mekong days flexible start times so the group can adjust to the weather and their own pace. For a scheduled group departure, lock the cruise operator and the domestic flights early because both sell out in peak months, build in a fixed 6:30 am departure for My Son and Cu Chi to stay ahead of the crowds, and add a rest buffer on the Halong-to-Hoi An travel day, which is the longest of the trip.
Is nine days enough to include Sapa or the Ha Giang loop?
No. Adding Sapa properly needs two extra nights and an overnight train or a five-hour road transfer each way, and Ha Giang needs three to four days on its own. If a group wants the northern mountains, extend to twelve or thirteen days and cut the Mekong Delta day rather than compressing the core route, or sell the mountains as a separate trip.
What cruise category should the Halong Bay night use?
Mid-range cruises in this template mean a well-reviewed boat with private bathrooms, air conditioning, and a maximum of around twenty cabins, sailing in the Lan Ha Bay area rather than the busiest central route. Budget cruises crowd the same anchorages and cut the kayaking and cave stops short; ultra-luxury boats add cost mainly through cabin size and dining rather than a materially different itinerary.
