Best time to go
Late May to early October for the mountains, with the Gergeti trail clear of snow. Kakheti’s grape harvest and rtveli festivities fall in late September and October. Winter closes or complicates the high passes to Kazbegi.

How hard is the Gergeti Trinity hike, and what are the alternatives?
It is a roughly 1.5- to 2-hour climb from Stepantsminda gaining about 400 metres, on a clear but sometimes muddy trail, at an altitude of around 2,170 metres at the church. Reasonably active travellers manage it comfortably; the descent is easy. For clients who would rather not hike both ways, shared 4x4s and private transfers run up the rough road to the church, so a common compromise is to drive up and walk down. On a bad-weather day the church is often in cloud, in which case the drive-up is the better call.
Can this itinerary be run without a car, using group transport?
Partly. Day tours from Tbilisi cover Kazbegi, Kakheti, and the Uplistsikhe or Vardzia direction as separate long round trips, so a client could string them together while based in Tbilisi, but that means backtracking to the capital every night and long days. For the itinerary as written, with an overnight in Kazbegi and a westward loop, a private vehicle is the practical choice and not expensive by European standards.
Is a week enough to add Svaneti or the Black Sea coast?
No. Svaneti needs three to four days on its own because of the drive from Zugdidi and the mountain roads, and Batumi on the coast is a separate two-day add. If a client wants either, extend to ten or eleven days and drop the Vardzia leg, or run this loop and sell Svaneti as a dedicated follow-on trip.
