Day 1

Guwahati to Shillong

Day 6

Return to Guwahati

Drive back to Guwahati (about three hours) with an optional Kamakhya Temple visit before the flight.

Best time to go

October to April is the most comfortable, and Dawki’s river is at its clearest from November to February. June to September brings extreme rainfall and dramatic waterfalls, but landslides and trail closures are common, and the Nongriat trek can be unsafe.

How hard is the Nongriat trek?

The trail to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge involves several thousand stone steps down and back up, often wet. It is doable for reasonably fit adults and older children but not suitable for clients with knee or heart problems. Quote a guide, suggest proper footwear, and offer Mawlynnong and Dawki as an easier alternative for less mobile travellers.

Should the trip start from Guwahati or Shillong?

Guwahati is the main gateway with the widest flight choice, and the drive to Shillong is about three hours. Shillong’s own airport has limited services, so most itineraries start and end in Guwahati. Leave enough buffer on the last day for road delays before an afternoon flight.

Can this be combined with Kaziranga or Assam?

Yes. A common extension adds one or two nights at Kaziranga National Park before or after Meghalaya, since both connect through Guwahati. Kaziranga’s park is closed during the monsoon, so check the season before selling the add-on.
