Best time to go
October to March is dry and pleasant across the hills, backwaters, and coast. The southwest monsoon from June to August is lush and low-priced but heavy, and some hill roads and park activities close.

How do agents shorten this Kerala template to five days?
Drop Thekkady and the Marari beach night. Run Fort Kochi for one night, Munnar for two, then a houseboat night and a final night back in or near Kochi. Thekkady is the most common cut because the spice plantations overlap thematically with Munnar’s estates and the Periyar lake safari is often underwhelming in dry months when animals stay away from the water. If the couple wants a beach finish instead of a hill focus, keep Marari and cut a Munnar night rather than losing the houseboat, which is the signature experience.
Is one night on the houseboat enough?
For most couples, yes. Boats stop cruising and moor by late afternoon for environmental rules, so a second day adds mooring time more than scenery. A two-night booking makes sense only on a larger premium boat with good deck space where the couple wants pure downtime, or if you route through the quieter Kumarakom side. Book a private boat, not a shared one, for a honeymoon, and confirm air conditioning runs overnight and not just when the generator is on.
Can this itinerary be reversed to end in the hills?
Yes, though ending on the backwaters or at Marari is the more relaxing sequence for a honeymoon. Reversing to finish in Munnar suits clients who want cooler air before a long flight, but the drive from Munnar back to Kochi airport is three to four hours and best not done on the departure morning, so build in a final night lower down.
