7-Day Ladakh Adventure Itinerary Template

A seven-day Ladakh circuit built around altitude: a proper rest day in Leh before any high pass, then Sham Valley, Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. The order matters as much as the places, so agents can explain to clients why the first day is empty.

Day 1

Arrival and rest in Leh

Fly in to Leh at about 3,500 metres, check in and rest completely. Drink fluids and avoid alcohol and strenuous walks.

Day 2

Leh local sightseeing

Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa and the market at an easy pace, with Thiksey or Hemis Monastery in the afternoon if the group feels well.

Day 3

Sham Valley

Drive to Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and the Indus and Zanskar confluence, returning to Leh for the night.

Day 4

Leh to Nubra via Khardung La

Cross Khardung La, descend to Diskit Monastery and the Hunder sand dunes, and stay in Nubra.

Day 5

Nubra to Pangong Lake

Scenic drive along the Shyok river road to Pangong Lake for sunset and a night by the water.

Day 6

Pangong to Leh

Sunrise at the lake, then a drive back to Leh over Chang La, with a free evening.

Day 7

Departure

Transfer to Leh airport; morning flights are standard, so keep the last night in Leh.

Best time to go

Late May to mid-September is the main window, when the high passes and the Nubra and Pangong roads are open. June to August is the busiest. Outside that window, snow can close the passes and many camps do not operate.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Day 1 left empty?

Leh sits at around 3,500 metres, and altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Resting on arrival and keeping the second day light lets the body adjust before Khardung La, which crosses at more than 5,000 metres. Explain this in the quote so clients do not read the empty day as poor value, and never sell a version that moves Nubra to Day 2.

Which permits does a Ladakh trip need?

Visiting Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake needs permits for the restricted areas, and the rules differ between Indian and foreign nationals. Most operators arrange them, but confirm the current process and costs before quoting, list them as included or excluded, and carry copies of ID for every traveller.

How can this be adapted for a shorter or gentler trip?

For five days, drop Nubra and run Leh, Sham Valley and Pangong as an out-and-back. For older travellers, skip Pangong and keep Leh, Sham Valley and a shorter Nubra trip, or fly in and out on schedule so the return does not depend on weather. Always keep at least one full acclimatisation day.
