Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable; April to June is very hot. Gaya is extremely busy during Pitru Paksha, usually in September or early October, when hotels and priests need booking well in advance. Bodhgaya is busiest from December to February, when Buddhist pilgrims and monks arrive from abroad.

Frequently asked questions

About this Gaya, Bodhgaya, Rajgir & Nalanda template

How should agents arrange pind daan in Gaya?

Most families use a local priest or panda who arranges the materials and the order of rituals at Vishnupad, the Falgu river and Akshayavat. Ask the client how many days of rituals they want, because traditions vary from one day to several. Confirm the priest and fees before travel, especially for Pitru Paksha.

Should the client stay in Gaya or Bodhgaya?

Bodhgaya, about 15 km from Gaya, has more and better hotels and is calmer. Gaya town is closer to Vishnupad, which can help for early-morning rituals during Pitru Paksha.

How can it be extended?

Continue to Varanasi, about five to six hours by road, for the ghats and Sarnath, which completes the main Buddhist circuit. Patna is the other common exit, with more flight options than Gaya.
